Ah, the spirit of Christmas

Police Department Decorates Tree With Sex Offender Photos

Wednesday,  December 17, 2008 7:55 AM

NORTH BALTIMORE, Ohio — A Christmas tree inside a northwest Ohio police department is decorated with more than just the usual trimmings.

Mug shots of local sex offenders are pasted on some of the ornaments.

Paper cutouts of bells and stars feature the faces and names of all eight registered sex offenders in the village of North Baltimore.

Police Chief Alan Baer thought the ornaments would raise awareness and says a great deal of foot traffic moves in and out of the department.

Baer says the display on the artificial tree isn't to make light of the crimes or disparage Christmas traditions.

He says the police chaplain thought it was a good idea.

Places not to cheat on your spouse -- South Korea

One of South Korea's best-known actresses, Ok So-ri, has been given a suspended prison sentence of eight months for adultery.

She admitted the offence and the court suspended the sentence for two years.

The trial took place after Ms Ok failed to get the constitutional court to overturn the strict law that makes adultery a criminal offence.

In her petition she said the law was an infringement of human rights and amounted to revenge.

According to the BBC correspondent in Seoul, John Sudworth, the scandal has kept South Korea's tabloid newspapers and internet chatrooms buzzing for months.

South Korea is one of the few remaining non-Muslim countries where adultery remains a criminal offense.

A person found guilty of adultery can be jailed for up to two years.

More than 1,000 people are charged each year, although, as in this case, very few are actually sent to jail.

EASTON, Pa. - The father of 3-year-old Adolf Hitler Campbell, denied a birthday cake with the child's full name on it by one New Jersey supermarket, is asking for a little tolerance. Heath Campbell and his wife, Deborah, are upset not only with the decision made by the Greenwich ShopRite, but with an outpouring of angry Internet postings in response to a local newspaper article over the weekend on their flare-up over frosting.

BEAUMONT, Texas  —  Texas police responding to a store's burglar alarm found a less-than-hardened criminal inside: He was 4, and playing with the toys.

Detective Randy Stevens says the child apparently unlocked a door at his nearby home, got out, then crossed a street to reach the discount store.

Store surveillance video shows the unidentified boy trying one of the front doors to a Family Dollar store about 3 a.m. Monday, only to find it locked.

But the second door was unlocked and the child went inside.

That triggered the silent alarm.

"When the officers got there, he was showing them his toys," said Officer Crystal Holmes.

Child Protective Services says the boy will be allowed to stay with extended relatives while they review the incident.

DUI? She just thought she was getting stopped in McDonald's drivethru for revoked license

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Paul police arrested a woman on suspicion of drunk driving Sunday at a McDonald's drive-thru.

Erica Toy Marie Ballard, 26, pulled into the McDonald's drive-through with St. Paul squad car behind her. Ballard said she thought was getting pulled over because her driver's license was revoked.

"I thought they were fixing to mess with me. ... I was fixing to get something to eat," she told the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Ballard says she couldn't get out of the drive-through because cars were behind and in front of her. She's contesting the accuracy of a breath test she took.

You Just Gotta Get Someone to Read Them Kanji

A respected research institute wanted Chinese classical texts to adorn its journal, something beautiful and elegant, to illustrate a special report on China. Instead, it got a racy flyer extolling the lusty details of stripping housewives in a brothel.

Chinese characters look dramatic and beautiful, and have a powerful visual impact, but make sure you get the meaning of the characters straight before jumping right in.

There were red faces on the editorial board of one of Germany's top scientific institutions, the Max Planck Institute, after it ran the text of a handbill for a Macau strip club on the front page of its latest journal. Editors had hoped to find an elegant Chinese poem to grace the cover of a special issue, focusing on China, of the MaxPlanckForschung journal, but instead of poetry they ran a text effectively proclaiming "Hot Housewives in action!" on the front of the third-quarter edition. Their "enchanting and coquettish performance" was highly recommended.

DETROIT —  Police say they raided a sex-for-cash party involving 19 adult female prostitutes and two 16-year-old girls, including the hostess's daughter.

Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans says authorities raided the Detroit home about 4 a.m. Sunday and discovered about 20 adult men, 19 adult female prostitutes, the 39-year-old homeowner, her daughter and another 16-year-old, both of whom were dancing partially nude.

Evans says the men paid a $15 cover charge plus whatever the prostitutes charged for sex. It isn't known whether the underage girls had offered sex for money.

The sheriff says most of the prostitutes and johns were ticketed and released, but the homeowner and three men believed to be involved in operating the party were arrested.

The woman's daughter was taken into protective custody. The other 16-year-old was released to her parents.

Well, are you the guy from X-Men? Just answer the question.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Hollywood actor and former British soccer player Vinnie Jones was arrested after a bar fight in downtown Sioux Falls, authorities said.

His movie credits include "Snatch," "Gone in Sixty Seconds" and as the character Juggernaut in "X-Men: The Last Stand."

Police said Jones got into a scuffle late Thursday at Wiley's Tavern and suffered cuts on his face from a beer glass.

A police sergeant said Jones apparently charged at Jesse Bickett of Montrose, who hit Jones with the glass.

Bickett was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault.

One of Bickett's roommates, Juan Barrera, said they were playing pool when Jones asked to play, then got offended when one of them asked if he was "that guy from X-Men." Barrera said he was punched by Jones, and countered with one or two of his own.

Authorities said Jones was treated at a hospital, then was charged with simple assault and posted bail Friday morning.

Jones' manager, Alex Cole, said Jones was on vacation, but he didn't know what the actor was doing in Sioux Falls.

Next time let's get takeout

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —  Students at one Alabama school can honestly say homework made them sick.

Nearly half of the students in a Smith Middle School language arts class became ill Friday after tasting meals that students had prepared as part of an assignment.

Birmingham schools spokeswoman Michaelle Chapman said the students were to write about their favorite dish and how it was prepared. The teacher allowed them to make and bring the dish to class if they wished.

Of the 18 students, 16 of them brought in dishes and eight students got sick after tasting them.

Chapman said it's unknown which dishes caused the students to have gastrointestinal problems including vomiting.

The students' parents were called and they were taken to their personal doctors' offices.

Chapman said health officials came and collected samples of the food for testing.
